Minneapolis Light Rail Transit Design for a Transit Shelter Fall 1999 (Mary deLaittre) The Minneapolis LRT has been a contentious project since its inception. After studying the proposed route carefully, I chose to design a station at the Cedar Riverside stop. This stop was of particular interest because of the cultural and economic conditions of that area. The neighborhood is one of the main concentrations of East Africans in the Twin Cities. Many of them live in Riverside Plaza -- Ralph Rapson's colorful but much maligned complex of towers (visible in the background). The neighborhood abuts the west bank of the University of Minnesota, making this stop the gateway for those coming to the University (especially visiting academics arriving from the airport). This sharp contrast between Cedar Riverside and the University campus is compounded by the fact that the rail line runs along the margin of the neighborhood, in an area that many perceive as unsafe. next |
