Fluff 751 Ninth Avenue New York, NY March-October 2004 This small bakery in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood is comprised of two dramatically contrasting features. The walls and ceiling are lined with stacked layers of 3/4” felt and wood. The system has much in common in masonry, where rigid and soft elements alternate. The result is an almost vertiginous horizontality that wraps around the space, blending from dark to light. A custom stainless steel chandelier extends across the ceiling. Forty linear incandescent lights are wired and supported by an interlocked field of bent stainless steel conduit. Underlying the seemingly random pattern of lights is a simple and repetetive formal system. The network of conduit is made up from just three different units which are repeated and mirrored to achieve a complex appearance. This simplification allowed a maximization of material and ease of assembly. next |
