Earle Brown Elementary School Building Renovation Fall 2002 (Jim Widder, Mark Searls, Bill Jensen) Earle Brown Elementary School is located in Brooklyn Center, MN -- a first ring suburb of Minneapolis. The original design of the building was simple and legible, with classrooms organized around an exterior courtyard. The next few decades had an accretive effect, with the addition of a new courtyard and new wings. Many classrooms were left without access to daylight and the courtyards were eventually closed because of code violations. The image on the right shows the dismal basement cafeteria. The project involved restoring a legible diagram to the school, designing for daylight and energy efficiency, and establishing a consistent system for all new construction. next |
