RTA | NYC First Step Housing Competition Lazor Office/Garrett Finney Architects Summer 2003 The First Step Housing competition asked for the design of a prototypical prefabricated dwelling unit of approximately 60 square feet, with 19 per floor in a renovated Bowery flophouse. The units would be instrumental in the realization of the First Step model, which is to provide safe and affordable short-term accommodation to individuals who are currently homeless and transitioning to housing. The image on the right shows the interior of an existing unit, which would be replaced by the chosen scheme. The competition team was headed by Lazor Office and Garrett Finney Architects. Charlie Lazor is a Minneapolis-based architect and co-founder of Blu Dot Design & Manufacturing. Garrett Finney is a Houston-based architect with 3-1/2 years experience at NASA's Habitability Design Center. Another contributor to the submission was Geoff McFetridge, a graphic designer and principal of Champion Graphics. Zoe Adler-Resnick, Matthew Streed, and myself worked on the competition as part of Lazor Office. next |
